Feriado!

Today is a holiday. It's "All Saints' Day" and the 250th aniversary of the 1755 earthquake that leveled most of Lisbon. Normally, holidays are for leaving your daily routine behind. Normally...but in my case (and in the case of many public school teachers) that's not happening because I get to spend all day making up the tests I have to give tomorrow. I'm not complaining. I'm thankful to have a job and apreciate the flexibility that this one gives me. But I have to say I think it's unfair of the Ministry of Education (and many people) to say that teachers don't work hard. If on the one hand we get extra vacation at Christmas, Easter and in the summer, on the other there are many times during the schoolyear when we don't just work 9-to-5, but well into the evening, too! What wonderful days lie ahead for me, with 137 tests to grade!

ah yes, vitor. it does not matter what country you are in. folks still say that teachers have too much vacation, too much free time and do not really earn their money. however, after 20+ years with 8th graders, i found few people willing to trade places with me. but, i loved my job and i love 8th graders. they are my favorite people on earth. l,g
Boa sorte!
